Singapore Institute of Directors

The Singapore Institute of Directors (SID) is Singapore's national association for company directors. SID says it was established in 1998 and has a mission to transform boards and empower board directors to be champions of good governance (SID, About SID). It is an association focused on directorship and corporate governance, rather than a government ministry, company registrar or statutory licensing authority.

Mission and institutional role

SID works with regulators and partners, serves as a voice for directors, and facilitates consultations and feedback sessions on regulatory matters (SID, About SID). Its role is therefore broader than running courses: it also contributes thought leadership, benchmarking research and governance indices, and connects directors, companies and other governance stakeholders. SID's Code of Governance describes the organisation as a company limited by guarantee and an association of directors and people interested in directorship and corporate governance in Singapore (SID, Code of Governance).

SID's network includes listed public companies, family businesses, startups and nonprofit organisations. The About SID page also identifies Climate Governance Singapore, for which SID is secretariat, and the Governance for Good Alliance as examples of its wider governance-ecosystem work (SID, About SID). These partnerships and networks do not transfer the statutory functions of regulators or make SID the regulator of every board.

Education and director development

SID builds directors' boardroom competencies through courses, workshops, advanced masterclasses, forum discussions and shorter learning sessions. Its current curriculum is organised for different stages and settings of directorship, including new and aspiring directors, experienced directors, SGX-listed entities and nonprofit organisations (SID, home and course directory). SID also offers customised board-development programmes for organisations such as listed companies, private companies, statutory boards, charities and other nonprofits (SID, customised professional development).

The SID Credentials Framework provides structured pathways for directors to strengthen competencies and demonstrate commitment to good governance. SID describes its Director Accreditation Programme as involving a formal exam and continuing professional development; specialist badges include pathways for listed-entity directors and trade-association and chamber directors (SID, Credentials). A SID course, completion certificate or credential should not be treated as a universal statutory condition for becoming a company director unless a separate law or regulator explicitly says so.

Governance resources and boundaries

SID publishes governance resources, statements of good practice, events and research for the director community. Its Code of Governance states that SID is governed by a volunteer Governing Council elected from among members, with management accountable to the Council (SID, Code of Governance). SID's guidance and education can help directors understand governance practice, but it does not replace the Companies Act, a company's constitution, applicable listing rules, regulatory directions or professional advice. The separate Company Director Fundamentals Programme 2026 is an ACRA–SID training initiative and should not be conflated with SID's entire institutional role or its separate credentials framework (ACRA, 28 August 2026).
