Postwar Self-Government (1945–1959)
Singapore's path from British Military Administration after 1945 to full internal self-government in 1959 — and onward to the 1963 Malaysia merger — ran through the 1955 Rendel Constitution, David Marshall and Lim Yew Hock's chief ministerships, the 1958 State of Singapore Act, and the PAP's 1959 election victory, while defence, foreign affairs, and internal security remained outside full local control until federation and later separation.
