NUS–OpenAI Strategic AI Collaboration 2026
Collaboration scope
The National University of Singapore (NUS) and OpenAI signed a memorandum of understanding on 6 August 2026, announced on 11 August 2026, to expand NUS's use of AI across education, research and administration. NUS described the collaboration as an addition to its existing AI resources, with joint initiatives intended to develop AI talent and innovation. (NUS, 11 August 2026, accessed 5 September 2026.)
Access and education measures
From 31 August 2026, NUS said all students, faculty and staff would have access to ChatGPT Edu in a university-managed environment with administrative, privacy and security controls; NUS also said workspace conversations and data would not be used to train OpenAI models. The university planned initial pilots in selected courses and progressive availability where AI adds educational value. From Academic Year 2026/27, NUS said the compulsory module THE1008 Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation would be part of the freshman experience for first-year undergraduates. (NUS, 11 August 2026, accessed 5 September 2026.)
Research and operational applications
The collaboration includes hackathons and build days for AI-enabled solutions. NUS also described AI Sense Maker, a proprietary conversational research platform developed by NUS Libraries and NUS IT using OpenAI language-model technology; it was scheduled for official launch on 20 August 2026 and designed to search more than 150,000 digitised materials in NUS collections. These are NUS deployments and pilots, not a claim that every university function or course is fully automated. (NUS, 11 August 2026, accessed 5 September 2026.)
