MHA Uniformed Scholarship
The MHA Uniformed Scholarship supports eligible Singaporeans and prospective citizens pursuing undergraduate study before a leadership career in one of Singapore's uniformed Home Team departments or as an SCDF paramedic.
MHA Uniformed Scholarship
The MHA Uniformed Scholarship is a Home Team scholarship route for people who want to pursue undergraduate study and then build a leadership career in one of Singapore’s five uniformed Home Team departments or as a paramedic with the Singapore Civil Defence Force. MHA’s page describes academic sponsorship as part of a longer leadership journey, not as a general education grant detached from Home Team service (MHA, updated 1 September 2026).
Eligibility and scholarship tiers
The published eligibility includes Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents intending to take up Singapore citizenship, strong leadership potential and interest in safeguarding Singapore, good academic and co-curricular records, and specified qualifications such as A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate, polytechnic qualifications or other high-school diplomas. Current undergraduates who are not in their final year may also apply for a mid-term scholarship; male applicants’ National Service performance is considered, and Singapore Merit Scholarship candidates have Officer Cadet School requirements (MHA, updated 1 September 2026).
MHA lists four scholarship tiers: the Singapore Merit Scholarship (SMS), Singapore Government Scholarship (SGS), Local Merit Scholarship (LMS) and Home Team Local Study Award (HTLSA). The exact tier offered is decided by the Scholarship Board, so the presence of several tiers should not be interpreted as an automatic entitlement to a particular award (MHA, updated 1 September 2026).
Funding, bond and leadership pathway
Depending on the award and study arrangement, MHA lists tuition and approved charges, a local or overseas maintenance allowance, pre-studies support, overseas airfare, National Service disruption, and possible sponsorship for a master’s degree or exchange programme. It also lists full salary during studies for applicable awards and a vacation attachment programme. The bond period starts when recipients assume official duty after completing their studies; MHA states that study duration affects the bond, including five years for non-English-speaking countries and six years for English-speaking countries (MHA, updated 1 September 2026).
Recipients may be placed on the Home Team Leaders-in-Development Programme and may later be considered for the Public Service Leadership Programme. These are career-development pathways described by MHA, not a guarantee of a particular rank, department posting or future appointment (MHA, updated 1 September 2026).
Study choices, application timing and mid-term route
MHA says scholars may study at local or overseas universities in most disciplines, except medicine, dentistry and architecture. Candidates interested in the SCDF paramedic service may pursue para-medicine or related emergency-health or clinical-practice disciplines. The page also states that applications are open until 15 March 2027 as of its September 2026 update (MHA, updated 1 September 2026). Current undergraduates have a separate mid-term route: they must be studying full time, have completed at least one semester, not be in their final year, and be on track for at least Second Upper Honours or an equivalent result. The mid-term award may backpay tuition and compulsory fees incurred before the award, while some benefits are limited to selected tiers. These details do not remove the Scholarship Board's discretion over award tier or guarantee selection.
