EcoFriend Awards 2026

Singapore’s EcoFriend Awards were introduced by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in 2007 to recognise individuals who have contributed significantly to Singapore’s sustainability journey. The 17th awards ceremony took place on 18 August 2026. MSE described recipients as coming from different parts of society, including students, community volunteers and corporate leaders (MSE, 17th EcoFriend Awards, 18 August 2026). The awards recognise individual contribution; they are not a regulatory approval, grant scheme or universal environmental-performance ranking.

2026 recognition and nomination scale

The 2026 ceremony recognised 14 individuals. NEA received 510 nominations across seven categories, with nominations exceeding 500 for the first time in more than a decade, according to the ministerial speech (MSE, 17th EcoFriend Awards, 18 August 2026). The nomination count is a count for this awards cycle, not the number of environmental volunteers in Singapore or a success rate for applicants. The official speech does not provide a complete category-by-category recipient table; recipient names and examples should not be expanded beyond what NEA or MSE publishes.

Examples of recognised community action

The 2026 examples show the breadth of work that the awards can recognise. Tzu Chi Environmental Sustainability Day was described as operating across 39 neighbourhoods and having diverted more than 10 million kilograms of recyclables from Semakau Landfill; a Zhenghua Youth Network leader was recognised for weekly food-rescue work and a litter-picking programme; and a Republic Polytechnic student leader was recognised for a clothing collection and redistribution drive that collected 3,732 items (MSE, 17th EcoFriend Awards, 18 August 2026). These are recipient- or initiative-specific figures, not national recycling or waste-diversion totals.

Relationship to climate adaptation

EcoFriend Awards recipients contribute through community networks, behavioural change, resourcefulness and action in shared spaces. MSE placed their work in the context of 2026 as the Year of Climate Adaptation and the development of Singapore’s first National Adaptation Plan, while noting that community perspectives can inform adaptation conversations (MSE, 17th EcoFriend Awards, 18 August 2026). That connection is strategic and participatory: receiving an EcoFriend Award does not mean that an individual is an official climate-adaptation planner or that the recipient’s initiative is a government programme.
