World Car-Free Day 2026 in Singapore
Singapore's World Car-Free Day 2026 programme runs from September to November, combining a location-based walking, cycling and public-transport challenge, a Joo Chiat traffic-free event and a Healthy 365 step challenge.
World Car-Free Day 2026 in Singapore
The Land Transport Authority (LTA), government agencies, community organisations and industry partners are organising Singapore's World Car-Free Day 2026 activities from September to November 2026 under the theme “More In Every Move”. The programme period is September–November 2026. The programme encourages walking, cycling and public transport while connecting participants with neighbourhoods, public spaces, communities and heritage (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026, 2 September 2026).
The programme is not a general car-use prohibition; participation and the temporary Joo Chiat closure are bounded by the activities and dates stated by LTA (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026).
The Invisible City
From 1 September to 30 November 2026, members of the public can use the CrowdTaskSG platform to complete location-based challenges by walking, cycling or taking public transport to destinations across Singapore. LTA developed this interactive gamified mobile experience with GovTech Singapore; completing challenges progressively reveals elements on a virtual map and directs participants to public spaces, community amenities, heritage sites, trails and other places of interest (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026). The challenges were developed with government agencies and organisations and are intended to help participants rediscover familiar neighbourhoods while learning about the places, communities and stories that shape everyday life. The platform activity is therefore a voluntary discovery experience with a defined programme period, not a transport compliance test, a survey of all journeys, or a measure of how much Singaporeans walk, cycle or use public transport (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026).
Joo Chiat Car-Free Day
On 3 October 2026 from 3:30pm to 9:30pm, a section of Joo Chiat Road between Dunman Road and East Coast Road will close to traffic for a public event. LTA and partners will offer interactive exhibits, sustainability showcases and family activities, while community and business groups will anchor heritage, food, arts, fitness and street-social programmes. The road closure and programme details are subject to LTA's progressive updates closer to the event (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026). The event is co-created with community partners, local businesses and residents to highlight Joo Chiat’s heritage, street life and identity. The factsheet also lists a music performance at Marine Parade TEL station and activities involving transport, community, arts, heritage and sustainability partners. Those partner activities sit within the announced event window and do not turn the whole Joo Chiat precinct into a permanently traffic-free area (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026).
LTA World Car-Free Day Challenge
From 14 to 30 September 2026, LTA and the Health Promotion Board are running a challenge for Healthy 365 users. A participant can earn a special World Car-Free Day badge by recording at least 10,000 steps on four consecutive days during the challenge period. This challenge is voluntary and not compulsory: it is a public-engagement and active-travel activity, not a change to road-traffic rules or a requirement that residents stop using cars (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026). The stated purpose is to encourage people to incorporate walking into everyday journeys and build habits supporting healthier and more sustainable travel. The badge condition is a participation criterion for this Healthy 365 challenge, not a national fitness target, a transport-usage statistic, or proof that a participant travelled entirely without a car during those four days (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026).
Public transport and partner roles
The programme involves transport operators alongside government agencies, community organisations and industry partners. For the Joo Chiat event, LTA’s factsheet says that members of the public travelling by train can enjoy a music performance staged by SMRT at Marine Parade TEL station from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; it also lists SBS Transit and SimplyGo among organisations offering programmes or experiences (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026). These references show partner participation in a specific programme, not a new operator-wide fare, service, route or safety rule. The event’s invitation to take public transport and the interactive challenges’ use of public transport are engagement choices; they do not make public transport mandatory for all visitors or residents.
Programme boundaries and later updates
The three components have different scopes: The Invisible City is a location-based mobile experience running from 1 September to 30 November; Joo Chiat Car-Free Day is a time-limited road closure and neighbourhood event on 3 October; and the Healthy 365 activity is a voluntary step challenge from 14 to 30 September (LTA, World Car-Free Day 2026). LTA says more information about road closures and activities at Joo Chiat will be made progressively available closer to the event. Accordingly, the factsheet is sufficient to establish the announced programme window and boundaries, but not a permanent traffic arrangement, final operational details, or a general policy that Singapore has become car-free.
