Anglican Diocese of Singapore

The Anglican Diocese of Singapore is a diocese of the Anglican Church, established as an independent diocese in 1909. It is one of four dioceses in the Church of the Province of South-East Asia and part of the worldwide Anglican Communion (Anglican Diocese, The Diocese of Singapore). It is a religious institution, not a Singapore Government ministry, statutory board or regulator.

Parishes and regional structure

The Diocese describes itself as one church made up of 27 parishes in Singapore, organised into seven Area Groups. Each parish is led by a Vicar appointed within the diocesan structure (Anglican Diocese, Our Parishes). Beyond Singapore, the Diocese exercises ecclesiastical oversight across seven deanery countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam (Anglican Diocese, The Diocese of Singapore). These are ecclesiastical and organisational relationships, not claims of Singapore state jurisdiction over those countries.

The Diocese's central administration supports the Bishop and the wider Diocese in areas including finance, human resources, membership, education, missions, youth and church operations. Its internal governance should not be confused with the ecumenical coordination role of the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS) or with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese's separate structure.

Education, healthcare and community services

The Diocese reports 11 schools, 17 pre-school services, and 44 healthcare and community services under St Andrew's Mission Hospital and Singapore Anglican Community Services (Anglican Diocese, The Diocese of Singapore). Its community-services page identifies medical, senior, psychiatric, autism, family and children's services delivered through those service arms (Anglican Diocese, Healthcare and Community Services). These are institution-linked services and facilities, not a universal public entitlement or proof that the Diocese administers Singapore's healthcare system.

The Diocese's education work includes Anglican-linked primary and secondary schools, a junior college, pre-schools and special-education schools. School governance, accreditation and public education rules remain part of Singapore's education system; Anglican affiliation does not make the Diocese the Ministry of Education.

History and interpretation

The Anglican presence in Singapore dates to the nineteenth century. The Diocese records the first Anglican church building as erected in 1837 and traces later education and medical work through institutions such as St Andrew's and St Margaret's; the independent Diocese of Singapore was established in 1909 (Anglican Diocese, Our History). Current counts for parishes, schools, pre-school services and community services are page snapshots and should be rechecked against the Diocese's latest official pages.

The Diocese is a Christian denomination and service network. It is not identical to NCCS, does not represent every Christian church, and should not be merged with MCS or the Roman Catholic Archdiocese. For Singapore religious-affiliation statistics, use the dated census denominator in christianity and churches rather than institutional service or membership counts.
