Blood Donation Eligibility Checker

Singapore's Health Sciences Authority (HSA) provides an online Blood Donation Eligibility Checker for potential donors. The checker asks health and eligibility questions, while a separate HSA travel-screening flow asks about countries or regions visited in the previous 12 months and uses travel details to assess whether a waiting period may apply (HSA, accessed 10 September 2026; HSA Travel Screening, accessed 10 September 2026). The tools are preliminary guidance before an appointment and not final approval; final assessment remains with medical screening professionals at the Bloodbank (HSA, accessed 10 September 2026).

What the checker screens

The checker is designed to identify common reasons a person may not be able to donate at a particular time, including health, medication, lifestyle and travel circumstances. HSA's current donor guidance states that a potential donor must generally be in good health, meet the published weight and haemoglobin criteria, and account for recent illness, medication and overseas travel (HSA, accessed 10 September 2026). Travel screening is especially important because infections acquired overseas can be transmitted through blood. The tool's result is not a diagnosis and does not override the donor questionnaire, medical interview or clinical decision at the Bloodbank.

The current HSA criteria illustrate why the online result is only a preliminary check. The published guidance says donors should not have had infection symptoms for at least one week, fever within the last four weeks or antibiotics within the last seven days; it also lists a minimum weight of 45 kg and haemoglobin thresholds of 13.0 g/dl for males and 12.5 g/dl for females. These criteria can interact with the person’s medical history and donation type, so a user should not stop prescribed medication or treat a single automated answer as medical clearance (HSA, last updated 17 July 2026).

How to use travel screening before booking

A donor can enter recent travel information into HSA's travel-screening flow to receive an indication of whether the destination and return date may affect donation timing. The flow asks which countries or regions the person visited in the last 12 months; HSA's donor guidance separately highlights overseas travel in the last four months as a reason to check the travel advice. HSA says the flow is intended to provide personalised advice and reduce unnecessary trips to Bloodbanks, but donors must still provide accurate travel history, dates and places during the formal donor questionnaire and medical interview (HSA Travel Screening, accessed 10 September 2026; HSA, last updated 17 July 2026). A preliminary “eligible” result is not an appointment confirmation or a guarantee that screening will approve donation, while a deferral indication should be checked against the current HSA guidance.

Relationship to donor rewards and appointment services

The Eligibility Checker answers a different question from the Blood Donor Healthpoints initiative. The checker concerns whether a person may proceed toward donation, whereas Healthpoints are a time-limited recognition mechanism for each successful blood donation (HSA, 15 April 2026). HSA also provides appointment and donor-portal services, but using an appointment channel does not bypass eligibility screening. A user can therefore have an appointment, a preliminary checker result and a reward account while still needing an in-person medical decision before donation. Donors should consult HSA directly when a tool result is unclear or when their health, medication or travel circumstances are not covered by the online questions.
