Singapore Green Building Public Engagement Survey 2020

Singapore Green Building Public Engagement Survey 2020

The Singapore Green Building Masterplan (SGBMP) was developed through public and built-environment engagement in 2020. BCA's public engagement report records the March–September 2020 field period for the survey; the survey gathered preliminary views on green buildings, readiness to take stronger climate action and possible initiatives for Singapore's green-building journey (BCA SGBMP Public Engagement Report, accessed 2 September 2026).

Survey design and respondent groups

The survey used three versions with slight question variations for the general public, built-environment industry practitioners and students. BCA reports close to 3,500 responses, with about 65% of respondents aged under 35. The reported response mix was approximately 41% general public, 10% industry and 49% students. These are the survey's response shares, not a probability sample of Singapore's population; they should not be read as population-wide approval rates without that qualification (BCA SGBMP Public Engagement Report, accessed 2 September 2026).

What the engagement was intended to inform

The survey was one input into a wider visioning and co-creation process. BCA and the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) also used focus-group discussions, digital engagement and a public poll to explore a shared vision and possible outcomes for the next stage of Singapore's green-building development. The survey therefore captured views for policy development and agenda-setting; it was not itself a Green Mark certification assessment, regulatory consultation outcome or measure of building energy performance (BCA SGBMP Public Engagement Report, accessed 2 September 2026).

Interpreting the reported figures

The close-to-3,500 figure is a count of survey responses collected during the stated 2020 field period, while the age and respondent-group percentages describe that response set. The report also describes broader engagement across multiple initiatives, which must not be merged with the survey denominator. Later summaries may cite headline percentages from the wider SGBMP engagement exercise, but those figures do not automatically describe every survey respondent or the resident population. The safest use of the survey is as dated evidence of stakeholder and public input into the SGBMP, with its recruitment channels and respondent composition kept visible.
