Singapore Standard SS 726:2026 — Liquid Cooling in Tropical Data Centres

Singapore launched SS 726:2026 Liquid Cooling in Tropical Data Centres on 27 August 2026. Enterprise Singapore describes it as the world's first standard focused on helping data centres adopt liquid cooling in tropical climates, where AI workloads increase heat and power-density demands (Enterprise Singapore, SS 726 media release, 27 August 2026).

What SS 726 is

SS 726 is a national technical standard jointly developed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Enterprise Singapore through the Singapore Standards Council, with industry consultation. It provides technical guidance for data-centre operators on designing, deploying and operating liquid-cooling systems, managing implementation risks, and integrating liquid cooling with existing air-cooled facilities (Enterprise Singapore, SS 726 media release, 27 August 2026).

The standard sits alongside Singapore's Tropical Data Centre standard and SS 715:2025 for data-centre IT-equipment energy efficiency. It complements IMDA's Green Data Centre Roadmap; it does not itself announce a new data-centre capacity allocation, operating licence, or universal legal requirement for every facility (Enterprise Singapore, SS 726 media release, 27 August 2026).

Why tropical liquid cooling needs specific guidance

Liquid cooling transfers heat from hardware chips through a fluid and can be more efficient than conventional air cooling for high-density computing. Enterprise Singapore's release says deployment can reduce data-centre-level energy consumption by more than 30% compared with traditional air cooling, while noting that the figure is a claimed comparative benefit rather than a guaranteed saving for every installation (Enterprise Singapore, SS 726 media release, 27 August 2026). Singapore's heat and humidity create additional operational issues, including equipment corrosion, microbial growth and biofilm formation in cooling fluid; leaks, pumps, piping and heat exchangers also require careful design and operation (Enterprise Singapore, SS 726 media release, 27 August 2026).

Lifecycle and water-efficiency guidance

SS 726 covers lifecycle considerations from initial design and pre-deployment through commissioning and daily operations. Its published scope includes floor loading, cooling-loop and equipment design, piping-material selection, fluid-quality requirements, monitoring and management, risk controls, and the choice and integration of coolant distribution units with existing air-cooled facilities (Enterprise Singapore, SS 726 media release, 27 August 2026). The standard also recommends practices for measuring and optimising water use, including input from PUB on calculating water-utilisation efficiency for liquid-cooled data centres. SS 726 is available for purchase through the Singapore Standards e-shop; the launch is not certification of a facility and does not make adoption mandatory (Enterprise Singapore, SS 726 media release, 27 August 2026).
