Tanglin Performing Arts Theatre

Singapore plans a new 1,000-seat performing-arts theatre in Tanglin, announced by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) on 27 August 2026. The National Arts Council (NAC) is working with developer Pacific Eagle Real Estate on the venue, which forms part of the redevelopment of the former Tanglin Shopping Centre near the gateway to Orchard Road (MCCY, 27 August 2026).

What is planned

The theatre is planned with around 98,000 square feet of space. MCCY describes it as a venue intended to strengthen Singapore's cultural infrastructure and respond to arts groups' need for more places to present work to larger audiences. The announcement frames it as one element in a broader pipeline of differentiated arts spaces, rather than as a replacement for every existing theatre or as an already-operating venue (MCCY, 27 August 2026).

The redevelopment is supported through the Urban Redevelopment Authority's Strategic Development Incentive (SDI) scheme. The theatre will sit alongside a new contemporary art museum to be operated by the Tanoto Art Foundation. Together, these facilities are presented by MCCY as a new cultural development intended to strengthen Tanglin's arts, cultural and lifestyle offering (MCCY, 27 August 2026).

Programming and operator arrangements

The intended venue model is globally connected but rooted in Singapore's arts scene. MCCY says the theatre is expected to bring new productions to Singapore while featuring local programming, creating opportunities for Singapore arts groups and artists to reach audiences, build partnerships and develop their practice (MCCY, 27 August 2026).

NAC said it would launch an Expression of Interest for potential operators soon after the announcement. The Government has secured use of the theatre for 20 years on favourable terms, including a waiver of base rent. The announcement says the resulting lower operating costs are intended to help the operator work with arts groups to grow audiences sustainably. Local arts groups may bid independently or with international partners, while international companies may bid with one or more local arts partners (MCCY, 27 August 2026).

Status and boundaries

As of 28 August 2026, this is a planned development announced by MCCY; the source does not provide an opening date, final operator, completed-building status or confirmed programme calendar. The 20-year arrangement describes the intended use period, not a claim that the theatre is already open. Its location in Tanglin places it within the wider Orchard Road area, but it is a distinct planned venue and should not be conflated with existing Orchard Road malls, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, or other operating arts institutions (MCCY, 27 August 2026; orchard road; arts policy).
