# SG Alert Emergency Broadcasts

SG Alert is SCDF's cell-broadcast emergency alert for crises such as major fires or terror incidents; it complements PWS and broadcast media, cannot be opted out of, and was phased in from a 10 May 2026 SingTel islandwide test toward StarHub, M1 and SIMBA by mid-2027.

# SG Alert Emergency Broadcasts

**SG Alert** is the Singapore Civil Defence Force's **mass emergency alert** for crises such as **major fires, chemical incidents, or terror-related events**, designed so the public can take **immediate protective action** ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). SG Alert uses **cell broadcast** to push pop-up messages **without mobile data** and **without collecting personal information**, and can be activated **islandwide** or in **geographic zones** ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). It complements the **Public Warning System (PWS)**, free-to-air TV and radio, social media, and **SGSecure** — it does not replace **995**, **999**, or PWS **Alarm** shelter instructions ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert)); [civil defence preparedness](/en/knowledge/article/sgkb.public-safety.civil-defence-preparedness), [improvised cover at home](/en/knowledge/article/sgkb.public-safety.improvised-cover-at-home)).

## Rollout, testing, and operator timetable

SCDF conducted an **islandwide public test** on **Sunday, 10 May 2026 at 12 p.m.** for **SingTel** network users (including **SingTel-hosted MVNOs** such as Gomo, VIVIFI, Zero1, and Zym mobile) and **foreign visitors** on those networks, including **data-only eSIM** plans, to validate performance before phased operationalisation ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). SCDF, **HTX**, and the **Infocomm Media Development Authority** work with mobile network operators on rollout; SCDF targets **StarHub by end-2026**, then **M1 and SIMBA by mid-2027** ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). Staggering accounts for different operator technical setups ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))).

Until each operator is onboarded, users on other networks may not receive SG Alert even during emergencies in the affected zone. Market structure and MVNO hosting are summarised in [telco and internet](/en/knowledge/article/sgkb.daily-life.telco-and-internet); SG Alert availability is an **operator-readiness** fact, not a universal constant across every SIM on day one.

## What users see and how alerts behave

Test and live alerts appear as a **pop-up** with header **"SG Alert"**, a **unique tone and vibration** lasting up to **10 seconds**, bypassing **Do Not Disturb** and silent mode ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). Some handsets may show **"Presidential alert"** instead of **"SG Alert"** because of compatibility issues; SCDF states the **content is the same** and that it is working to regularise the header ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))).

Messages are meant to carry a **brief incident description**, **affected location(s)**, **protective actions**, and **official links** ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). Alerts can be issued in **English** and the user's **preferred mobile language** among Singapore's four official languages; devices set to other languages receive **English** ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). SG Alert is **free**, **not unsubscribable**, and does not require app downloads ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). It can override an **ongoing call** with a full-screen pop-up ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))).

SCDF states supported phones need the **latest operating system in Singapore**, citing **Apple iOS 26.4** or **Google Android 12 and above** with the latest Google Play system update as examples on the SG Alert page ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). **Tablets and cellular smart watches** may receive alerts but the service is **intended for mobile phones** ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). OS requirements are volatile; check SCDF's page before relying on a specific version threshold.

## SG Alert versus PWS, SGSecure, and emergency hotlines

**PWS** uses fixed sirens with **Alarm**, **All Clear**, and **Important Message** signals; annual **Important Message** familiarisation soundings on **15 February** and **15 September** at **6:20 p.m.** are not evacuation orders ([SCDF PWS, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/public-warning-system)). **SG Alert** targets phone screens for **immediate-action** civil-defence or major-incident messaging and may carry richer text than a siren alone ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). **SGSecure** remains a separate app-based vigilance and roadshow channel ([sgsecure campaign 2026](/en/knowledge/article/sgkb.public-safety.sgsecure-campaign-2026)).

SG Alert is **only for emergencies requiring immediate public protective action**, not for routine government messaging or commercial alerts ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert))). A personal medical emergency still requires **995**; immediate police danger requires **999** ([emergency services and safety](/en/knowledge/article/sgkb.daily-life.emergency-services-and-safety)). Government scam warnings use other channels; SG Alert's no-opt-out design is for **life-safety emergencies**, not marketing.

## Common retrieval mistakes

Errors include treating a **May 2026 test alert** as a real incident instruction without reading the body, assuming **every MVNO** received alerts before its host MNO rollout, confusing **Presidential alert** headers with unrelated foreign systems, or using SG Alert receipt as proof that **shelter obligations** or **Fire Certificate** duties are satisfied. Practical rule: **read SG Alert text and follow its protective actions; use PWS Alarm/All Clear for siren-based shelter doctrine; dial 995/999 for personal emergencies; keep phone OS updated per SCDF's published list** ([SCDF SG Alert, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/emergency-alert-(sg-alert)); [SCDF PWS, accessed Oct 2026](https://www.scdf.gov.sg/home/civil-defence-shelter/public-warning-system)).
