# Wildlife Encounters and Coexistence in Singapore

NParks and Singapore's Animal and Veterinary Service publish general and species-specific guidance for encounters with wild animals. The guidance explains how to keep people and animals safe, when to contact the Animal Response Centre, and why the public should not feed, handle or relocate wildlife.

# Wildlife Encounters and Coexistence in Singapore

Wildlife encounters are part of visiting Singapore's parks and living near green spaces. NParks and the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) advise the public to give wild animals room, stay calm, avoid feeding or handling them, and follow guidance for the particular species. The right response is not always to call for an animal to be removed: AVS distinguishes ordinary sightings from animals that are injured, trapped or distressed, and provides a professional response channel for the latter ([NParks, “When encountering animals,” accessed 25 October 2026](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/visit/when-visiting-parks/when-encountering-animals); [AVS, “Encountering wildlife,” accessed 25 October 2026](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/)).

## General steps when you encounter wildlife

NParks' general advice is to remain calm, keep a safe distance and back away slowly if an animal approaches. Do not approach, touch, chase, corner, feed or release a wild animal; avoid flash photography, and stay on designated routes in nature parks and reserves. These principles reduce the chance of startling an animal and protect the person as well as the animal. They are a starting point, not a substitute for species-specific instructions: a macaque near a bag, a crocodile beside water and a snake in a home call for different precautions ([NParks, “When encountering animals,” accessed 25 October 2026](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/visit/when-visiting-parks/when-encountering-animals); [NParks, “Nature parks and reserves dos and don'ts,” accessed 25 October 2026](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/visit/when-visiting-parks/etiquette/nature-parks-reserve-dos-donts)).

For an animal that is injured, trapped or in distress, AVS says not to pick it up or take it to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation. Contact NParks' 24-hour Animal Response Centre at **1800-476-1600** so trained personnel can advise or assist. This is the official wildlife-response channel described by AVS, not a direction to handle the animal yourself ([AVS, “Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation,” updated 3 July 2026](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/wildlife-management/centre-for-wildlife-rehabilitation/)).

## Why the advice differs by animal

For macaques, AVS says to stay calm and quiet, avoid direct eye contact, and back away slowly without running or turning around. Secure food and items such as plastic bags that may attract their attention; do not touch, chase or corner them. If a macaque enters a home, AVS gives separate indoor guidance and says to call the Animal Response Centre if further assistance is needed ([AVS, “Macaques in Singapore,” updated 31 October 2025](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/macaques/)).

For wild boars, keep well away, especially when piglets are present; do not touch, chase or corner them, and keep pets close on a leash. AVS also advises against loud noise and flash photography. For snakes, remain calm, back away slowly, do not handle or corner the animal, and keep pets away. If a snake is inside a home or persists in an area, AVS directs the public to its Animal Response Centre rather than asking residents to catch it ([AVS, “Wild Boars in Singapore,” updated 8 September 2026](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/wild-boars/); [AVS, “Snakes in Singapore,” updated 15 July 2026](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/snakes/)).

Crocodile guidance is more location-specific: AVS tells visitors to stay on designated routes, keep away from the water's edge and not enter the water. If a crocodile is sighted, contact the Animal Response Centre; do not approach, provoke, touch or feed it. AVS advises anyone bitten or attacked by a wild boar, snake or crocodile to seek medical attention immediately ([AVS, “Estuarine Crocodiles in Singapore,” updated 31 October 2025](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/estuarine-crocodiles/); see also AVS species guidance for [wild boars](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/wild-boars/) and [snakes](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/snakes/)).

## Reporting, legal boundaries and how to use this guide

Use the Animal Response Centre for wildlife assistance: AVS identifies its 24-hour line, **1800-476-1600**, for injured, trapped or distressed animals and other encounter assistance. In particular, do not attempt to carry a wild animal to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation; that centre's page explicitly directs the public to call the response centre instead. Species pages also specify when sightings should be reported, including sick or dead wild boars and crocodile sightings ([AVS, “Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation,” updated 3 July 2026](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/wildlife-management/centre-for-wildlife-rehabilitation/); [AVS, “Wild Boars in Singapore,” updated 8 September 2026](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/wild-boars/); [AVS, “Estuarine Crocodiles in Singapore,” updated 31 October 2025](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/estuarine-crocodiles/)).

Feeding wildlife in Singapore is prohibited under the Wildlife Act, and NParks warns that removing wild animals from nature reserves and other NParks-managed areas is illegal under the Parks and Trees Act. A sighting alone does not mean an animal should be approached, captured or relocated. Use the current AVS page for the species involved, because the published instructions differ by animal and situation; this guide summarises public-facing safety advice and is not a wildlife-handling or veterinary manual ([NParks, “When encountering animals,” accessed 25 October 2026](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/visit/when-visiting-parks/when-encountering-animals); [AVS, “Encountering wildlife,” accessed 25 October 2026](https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/wildlife/encountering-wildlife/)).
