Its statutory functions include defining dental specialties, accrediting recognised training programmes, certifying applicants who meet the conditions, recommending continuing professional education and advising the Singapore Dental Council (SDC) on specialist registration ([DSAB, Functions and duties, last updated 5 January 2026](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/who-we-are\/dsab\/); [Singapore Statutes Online, Dental Registration Act 1999](https:\/\/sso.agc.gov.sg\/Act\/DRA1999)). DSAB accreditation and specialist registration are separate steps: SDC maintains the specialist register and decides the subsequent registration application.\n\n## DSAB's remit and its relationship with SDC\n\nDSAB's work concerns specialist recognition within dental regulation. It sets the relevant standards, determines recognised training, assesses applications and issues an accreditation outcome for applicants meeting the criteria under the Dental Registration Act ([DSAB, Functions and duties, last updated 5 January 2026](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/who-we-are\/dsab\/)). The Dental Specialist Accreditation Committee (DSAC) evaluates and assesses accreditation across specialties, while the DSAB is the board responsible for the overall framework and related decisions ([DSAB, Who we are, last updated 4 September 2025](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/who-we-are\/)). The roles of committee and board should not be conflated with the statutory register maintained through SDC.\n\nSince 1 January 2020, the Secretariat of healthcare Professional Boards (SPB) has supported DSAB with secretariat and operational functions. General dentist registration and practising certificates remain SDC matters as well.\n\n## Accreditation followed by specialist registration\n\nThe official registration model describes a sequence: an eligible dentist applies for specialist accreditation; after successful assessment DSAB issues a Dental Specialist Accreditation Letter; the applicant then presents that letter to SDC to apply for entry in the Dental Specialists Register ([DSAB, Specialists Registration Model, last updated 24 April 2025](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/specialist-accreditation\/specialists-registration-model\/)). DSAB accreditation alone does not complete specialist registration, and the accreditation letter should not be treated as proof that the dentist is already on SDC's specialist register. A general SDC registration, a specialist accreditation outcome and specialist-register entry are related but distinct records.\n\nThe DSAB FAQ says its accreditation route is currently open to dentists registered with SDC who meet DSAB's conditions. It also explains that successful accreditation and subsequent SDC registration enable use of the specialist title in the registered specialty ([DSAB, Frequently Asked Questions, last updated 23 January 2026](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/resources\/frequently-asked-questions\/)). Specialist registration is not compulsory for all dentists: a dentist may practise without specialist-register entry, but cannot legally call themselves a specialist solely because they have relevant qualifications or experience. The FAQ further says the Dental Registration Act does not mandate that registered specialists restrict their practice to the listed specialty, although such restriction is strongly encouraged. Thus specialist-register status governs professional recognition and title use; it should not automatically be represented as a statutory restriction that a dentist may only perform work within that specialty.\n\n## Specialties and changing criteria\n\nDSAB's FAQ listed eight registrable dental specialties as of 23 January 2026: Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Dental Public Health and Special Care Dentistry ([DSAB, Frequently Asked Questions, last updated 23 January 2026](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/resources\/frequently-asked-questions\/)). The specialty list is an administrative and professional recognition framework, not a list of all dental services or a claim that every dentist must become a specialist. DSAB's criteria pages may specify discipline-specific training and documentation; those details should be checked against the current call and relevant specialty criteria.\n\nDSAB's specialist-training pages state that the recognised list may develop as the demands and relevance of the profession change ([DSAB, List of recognised specialties, last updated 1 July 2025](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/specialist-training\/list-of-recognised-specialties\/)). Numbers of specialties, assessment schedules, application windows, documents and processing times should therefore be attributed to the dated DSAB page that reports them. The durable rule is the division of responsibility: DSAB establishes and assesses specialist accreditation; SDC controls the subsequent registration, register entry and professional-regulatory role.\n\n## How to interpret a specialist claim\n\nWhen checking a claim that someone is a dental specialist in Singapore, distinguish qualification or experience from the formal accreditation and registration pathway. DSAB's public FAQ says being qualified or experienced by itself does not permit someone who is not on the specialist register to legally call themselves a specialist; the specialty title follows successful DSAB accreditation and SDC registration ([DSAB, Frequently Asked Questions, last updated 23 January 2026](https:\/\/dsab.healthprofessionals.gov.sg\/resources\/frequently-asked-questions\/)). Conversely, absence from the Dental Specialists Register does not by itself establish that a person is unregistered as a dentist or forbidden from practising dentistry: the ordinary dentist register and the specialist register serve different purposes.\n\nThe practical query determines which body matters. Ask SDC about a dentist's registration, practising certificate, conduct or specialist-register status; ask DSAB about accreditation criteria and recognised training; and consult the relevant current pages for application details. A clinic or hospital may also set credentialing, privileging or supervision requirements, but an employer's decision is not DSAB accreditation or SDC registration. Keeping these boundaries clear avoids turning a specialist title, accreditation letter, ordinary dental registration and workplace appointment into interchangeable claims.\n#
